A MEDITATION ON SELF IDENTITY

By Simply Sheneka
A MEDITATION ON SELF IDENTITY

We identify with many things—our name, our roles, our possessions, even our emotions. But have you ever stopped to ask yourself, Who am I beyond all of this?

Our identification with external things is often the root of our suffering. When your favorite basketball team loses, you feel as if you lost. When your car is damaged, it feels as though you are hurt. If someone criticizes who they think you are, it stings as if they’ve reached inside you and attacked your very being.

But is this truly who you are? Or is it just a construct—a collection of thoughts, labels, and fleeting emotions? If you could separate yourself from these attachments, would you experience more peace?

There is a way to free yourself from unnecessary pain and drama. The key is to recognize what you are not. This simple meditation will help guide you through that process, allowing you to detach from false identities and uncover the deeper truth of your existence.

A Meditation On Self-Identity

Find a quiet, comfortable place where you won’t be disturbed. Sit or lie down, close your eyes, and take a few deep breaths. Inhale slowly through your nose, allowing your body to relax. Exhale, releasing any tension. Let your breathing find a natural rhythm.

Now, gently bring these questions into your mind:

  • Where am I?
  • What am I?
  • Who am I?

Let these questions settle within you. Don’t rush to find an answer—just observe.

Exploring The Body

Turn your attention to your physical form. Feel the weight of your body. Now, focus on your leg. If you were to lose it, would you still be you? Are you your leg?

Move through different parts of your body, asking:

  • Am I here?
  • Is this my true self?

If every part of your body were changed or removed, would you cease to exist? Or would you still be there, beyond the physical?

Observing The External World

Open your eyes and look around. See the objects in your environment.

  • Are you that chair?
  • Are you that phone?
  • If your favorite item were lost or broken, would you be broken?

We often feel pain when things outside of us change, but they were never truly us to begin with. Ask yourself, Which of these things am I?

Questioning Your Name And Identity

Close your eyes again and say your name in your mind. Does it give you a sense of identity? Now, ask yourself:

  • If I had no name, would I still be me?
  • Am I really [your name]?

For a deeper perspective, replace your name with another. Say, I am [another name] and notice how it feels. Does your sense of self shift? If your identity was nothing more than a name, then why does it feel different when you change it?

Your name is just a label, a collection of ideas that even others perceive differently than you do. But who you are goes beyond a name.

Detaching From Feelings And Thoughts

As emotions arise, observe them without attachment. Ask yourself:

  • Am I this fear?
  • Am I this pain?
  • Am I this desire, sadness, pleasure, or anger?

Emotions pass through you—they are not you. Just as a storm moves across the sky but doesn’t change the sky itself, your feelings come and go, but your true self remains.

The same applies to your reputation, your clothes, and even your beliefs. None of these define you at your core.

Returning To Awareness

Continue this meditation for about twenty minutes. When you're ready, take a deep breath and slowly open your eyes. Pay attention to how you feel. Do you notice a sense of lightness, a shift in perspective? Do you feel less attached to things, emotions, and labels?

Practice this meditation as often as needed to remind yourself of what you are not. With time, you may find that the unnecessary burdens of attachment, comparison, and false identity begin to dissolve—revealing a deeper, more peaceful sense of self.

Because at the core of it all, you are something much greater than a name, a title, or a fleeting emotion. You simply are.
